ABOUT THIS TRIP:

Head into the heart of Southwestern Europe with this 11-day small-group tour of Portugal! You will come face-to-face with breathtaking seaside landscapes, fascinating historic villages, and mesmerizing castles that will leave you in awe. Your journey will begin in Lisbon, the captivating coastal capital of Portugal, known for its colorful buildings, famous landmarks, and twisting cobblestone streets. From there you will travel to Obidos to see the hilltop castle and admire the city’s medieval fortifications before you explore the fishing village of Nazare. Visit the Santa Maria Monastery in Batalha, and travel to Fatima, a famous pilgrimage destination where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared in 1917. Your next stop will be in Coimbra, bathed by the beautiful Mondego River, before you visit Aveiro, the “Venice of Portugal” known for its picturesque canals and perfectly painted boats. Travel to Porto, a breathtaking coastal city by the Douro River, and explore Fatima, one of the most important pilgrimage destinations known to Christianity. Next, you will visit Natural Arrábida Park, known for its spectacular seaside landscapes, and explore Elvas, where you will find plenty of fascinating forts. Travel to Evora, a World Heritage City boasting thousands of years of history, before you make your way back to Lisbon where your small-group tour of Portugal will come to an end!

ITINERARY:

DAY 1 –  CANADA:Make your own way over to your gateway airport for your overnight flight to Lisbon. Enjoy complimentary meals and extra on-flight services. Overnight Onboard Flight
 
DAY 2 – LISBON ARRIVAL: Welcome to Lisbon! Upon arrival at the Lisbon International Airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel, where you will spend the night. Overnight in Lisbon
 
DAY 3 – LISBON: Enjoy a delicious breakfast followed by a half day tour of the beautiful city of Lisbon. You will first discover Belém where the 16th century Monastery of Jerónimos is (UNESCO World Heritage Site), visit the Belém pastry “pastel” factory dated from 1837 where you will taste the delicious “pastéis de Belém”. You will also stop at Belém Tower to take some photos and continue to hotel. Free afternoon at leisure to explore the city. We recommend a visit to Sintra, the most romantic Portuguese town, UNESCO World Heritage Site. Also, we suggest you visit Piriquita coffee shop in the center and taste the delicious pastries: “Travesseiros and Queijadas” – not included. Perhaps you will book one of the tours. DAY 4 – LISBON – OBIDOS – NAZARE – BATALHA – FATIMA: After breakfast, you will drive to Northern Portugal with your first stop at the medieval walled city of Obidos. Obidos shows typical Portuguese charm, from the narrow-cobbled streets and the quaint houses to the imposing hilltop castle, which once guarded the region. You will continue to Nazaré, a typical fishing village and seaside resort, famous for its high waves. The tour will continue to Batalha, and you will have time to admire the Santa Maria monastery listed as a UNESCO heritage site. Overnight in Fatima
 
DAY 5 – FATIMA – AVEIRO – PORTO: In the morning visit Fatima, counted among the largest centers of Mariano worship. You go explore the city on your own, get the chance to visit Aljustrel which is a hamlet located at the outskirts of Fatima. It is the birthplace of Lucia dos Santos, Francisco and Jacinta Marto, who are known to have witnessed three apparitions of Angel of Peace in the year 1916. Departure to Aveiro, known as the “Venice of Portugal”. You will have some free time to visit the city, we recommend a Moliceiro boat tour along the river to admire the beautiful Art Nouveau buildings and the salt pans or taste the delicious “Ovos moles” typical local pastry. Then, you will be conduct toward Porto, you will be transferred to your hotel. Remainder of the day at your leisure. Overnight in Porto
 
DAY 6 – PORTO: Your day will begin in Porto, a beautiful city situated next to the Douro River. Porto is a fascinating and vibrant city that is rapidly becoming one of Western Europe’s most respected tourist destinations. The city boasts an extensive history, interesting tourist attractions, a buzzing nightlife, and outstanding tourist facilities. On the morning you will have a sightseeing to get familiar with the main attractions of the city. Then you will have the afternoon at leisure to explore the city on your own. There is a lot to see and do in Porto, and this diverse city will appeal to a wide range of visitors, find what suits your taste. Porto is a historic and varied city, from the warren of narrow streets that make up the ancient Ribeira district. The region is famed for producing Port, which is stored and matured in the vast cellars along the banks of the Douro River. You might finish your day by walking through Jardins do Palácio De Cristal to enjoy pleasant views of the Douro River, or maybe book one of the optional tours. Overnight in Porto
 
DAY 7 – PORTO – COIMBRA – LISBON: After breakfast, drive to Coimbra. In Coimbra, bathed by Mondego river and known as the city of students, was created the first university of Portugal, also one of the oldest in Europe. You can visit the university (not included) which was once the residence of Portuguese Kings, with its Library, considered one of the most beautiful in the world and currently a World Heritage Site. Free time to walk in the city. After visiting, you will reach your final destination of the tour: Lisbon, Transfer to the hotel. Overnight in Lisbon
 
DAY 8 – LISBON – NATURAL ARRABIDA PARK – ELVAS – EVORA:

Today you will depart your hotel and set out to explore the Alentejo Region. On the way, you will stop at a scenic viewpoint in Cristo Rei, from where you can see the breathtaking city of Lisbon. You may choose to head on our optional wine-tasting tour in Setubal. From there you will continue your journey to Natural Arrábida Park, to discover beautiful hidden places you’ve never seen before. Situated next to the sea between Setúbal and Sesimbra, Arrábida Natural Park boasts incomparable natural beauty, where the deep blue color of the sea mixes with the light white tones of the chalk cliffs and the depths of the green vegetation that covers the mountain range. Spend some free time in Setubal for lunch. From there you will continue your journey to Elvas, a World Heritage Site classified “Garrison Border Town of Elvas and its Fortifications”. Go on a scenic stroll through the narrow streets of the village, known for its unique walls and fascinating fortifications. Continue  to Evora. Overnight in Evora

DAY 9 – EVORA: Get ready to explore Evora, classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage City, thanks to its excellent preservation throughout the centuries. This fascinating city boasts more than 5000 years of history and has only continued to grow through developments without losing its traditional characters that make up the beauty and charm Evora has to offer. Once you arrive in Evora, you will have time to walk through the historical center and get a feel of the atmosphere of this area. Your tour will continue up the narrow streets of the Old Town, reaching Giraldo Square, where the Inquisition once held its headquarters. You will also have time to explore the centuries-old Roman Temple and get a glimpse of the 12th-century cathedral. In the already distant 16th century, Evora thrived with culture and tradition in its university as much as it continues to today. Enjoy a short visit to the centuries-old university courtyard. From there you may spend the afternoon at leisure – take the opportunity to further explore the city, admire the architecture, see the famous landmarks, or even visit the Chapel of Bones. Overnight in Evora

DAY 10 – EVORA – LISBON: Spend the morning free at leisure to further explore Evora. You may also take the opportunity to head on our optional tour to Reguengos de Monsaraz. In the afternoon, you will depart the Alentejo Region and make your way back to Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal. Spend your final night in this beautiful city known for its captivating cobblestone streets, colorful cityscape, and fascinating culture before your tour of Portugal comes to an end. After lunch, you will set out to explore Amieira, one of the most emblematic riverside villages of Lake Alqueva, standing a few meters from its banks. The Alqueva Dam, one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe, is a vast mass of water reaching as far as the eye can see, surrounded by a beautiful natural landscape, and is an incredible sight to see. Next, you will visit the medieval village of Monsaraz, which maintains the magic from ancient times like few others in the world. This captivating hilltop village is suspended in time, as it is one of the oldest villages in Portugal. In 2017, Monsaraz won the category “Monument Villages” in the competition 7 Maravilhas de Portugal – Aldeias (7 Wonders of Portugal – Villages).

DAY 11 – LISBON – CANADA: After a delicious breakfast at your hotel, make your way to the international airport in Lisbon to board your flight back home.
